Dear friends,
It's difficult for me to write to you as I sit and listen to the beginning of
war. Still, this message is vital.
PENNY had a general meeting earlier tonight. I apologize that I didn't get
more advance notice to everyone. Things are happening so quickly, and there
are so many meetings, that we need to be in constant touch with one another.
The citywide demonstration for March 26th is on. We need every school in our
organization to organize staff, parents, and students. We've set a goal of
at least 15 people from each school (and hopefully a lot more). The
demonstration is at the Tweed Courthouse, 52 Chambers Street (#4, 5, or 6
train to Brooklyn Bridge), beginning at 4:30. Please let us know by 3
o'clock Thursday how your school is organizing and how many people you expect
to bring.
We intend to mass on the steps, make our statements, and deliver printed
materials to people inside Tweed (through a delegation).
What will you bring to this demonstration?
•Lots of signs that announce your support for small, progressive schools
•Petitions of support from parents for your school
•Student work
•Teacher reports about students.
What are our slogans? (I need help with this.)
•In our schools we trust.
•Small schools find ways to support all children; standardized tests fail
children.
•We measure success one student at a time.
•What else?
WHAT DO WE WANT? 1-OFFICIAL RECOGNITION OF ALL OF OUR SMALL SCHOOLS AS
SCHOOLS IN THEIR CURRENT FORMS, 2-WAIVERS SO WE CAN CONTINUE TO DEVELOP
CURRICULUM THAT SURPASSES THE MANDATED CURRICULA, AND 3-TO BE PLACED IN
NETWORKS OF LIKE-MINDED SCHOOLS WITH INSTRUCTIONAL SUPERINTENDENTS WHO WILL
SUPPORT OUR WORK IN WORD AND DEED.
Please write back and let everyone know what your school is doing. Thank
you. Bruce Kanze
