Under the auspices
of Episcopal Social Services, Inc. the Institute for Leadership
and Career Development has been implementing its YouthBuild Brownsville
program since 1996. YouthBuild Brownsville is a year-long training
program designed to assist 20-35 young adults ages 16-24 that
have dropped out of school. The training cycle includes educational
and job training services consisting of basic education skills,
GED preparation, life skills, leadership development skills, job
readiness, construction on-site training, and computer literacy.
Participants also receive counseling, support service referrals,
and job placement assistance.
Construction training takes place at the sites located in Community
District 16 the neighborhood of Oceanhill Brownsville. The buildings
that the young people work on are owned and operated by the
Oceanhill Brownsville Tenants Association (OHBTA). They also
provide all of the construction materials as well as necessary
licenses and permits. The apartments that are renovated by the
trainees will be rented to low-income families.
CEC provides basic
education, GED preparation as well as college preparation. Classes
are designed to integrate multi-cultural awareness, self-esteem,
life skills, and work values. Cooperative learning strategies
are utilized as well as diverse approaches that address individual
learning styles.
