Rikers Island
Educational Facility (RIEF) is an alternative high school of the Board of
Education of the City of New York working in cooperation with the Department
of Corrections. We offer standard academic courses in English, mathematics,
science, social studies and computer literacy. We also provide our students with an Arts
program which works with The Waterways Project for Art and Literature. Additionally, our students are able to
acquire or improve some vocational skills through training in our
professionally equipped print and auto shops.
The average length of enrollment per student is approximately two
months. However, it is not unusual for a few students to stay a few days, a
year , or more than a year. Most of our students are still in the
adjudication process of their cases.
To address this situation, we offer classes which gives our students a
better understanding of criminal law
and court proceedings. The educational
levels of our students range from those with special educational needs to
others who have high school diplomas, GEDs, or have already earned college
credits. Despite the difficult circumstances, the administration and staff,
along with a core of active parents are working to create an environment
conducive to learning and academic excellence. |
