Email FAQ This FAQ is a supplement to the official page created by DIT What is this FAQ about? Free email available to all employees of the Department of Education. The email account is just one part of a wider user database. The database is called Active Directory and the email/calendar component is called Exchange; both are Microsoft products. Just by getting an email account, you are by necessity added to the Active Directory database, and in the coming few years you will find more and more services tied to this account. I thought Teachers already had email accounts? All teachers in the DOE had email accounts during 2002. Those accounts ended in @nycteach.net and were provided free of charge by Apple. That service has ended and the DOE has provided teacher email accounts that end in @nycboe.net. How do I access my email? The user interface to Exchange is called Outlook. There are three different faces of Outlook:
Who provides it? The system is run by DIT, the accounts are administered by the districts. Can I forward my email to another account? No. How do I know what my username is? The directory can be seen from any computer in the DOE network. It is not available to the rest of the internet. What is my email address? Your email address is your username (see above) followed by @nycboe.net How do I log in? When logging in to OWA, you need to prepend "district/" to your username (as in "district/jsmith"). The initial password is the last 6 digits of your social security number. Where do I go to log in? http://www.altschools.org/email Is my email private? What can I use this account for? This email account should be used for work-related purposes only. You should have a separate account for personal email. According to the DOE Internet Acceptable Use Policy, users will use the system only for educational and professional activities. |
