The Office of Adult and Continuing Education is the major provider of adult literacy and family literacy education services in New York City. We are an integral part of the City of New York Department of Education's parent initiatives and Alternative Programs under the Department’s Office of Youth Development and School-Community Services.
We offer over 750 classes throughout the city in schools and community-based organizations, Monday through Saturdays, days and evenings. We operate three Adult Learning Centers located in Brooklyn, Manhattan and Queens as well as regional offices located throughout the city.
Ongoing registration for classes in Adult Basic Education, GED Preparation, and English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESL) is held regularly at offices around the city. Registrations for occupational courses are held periodically.

The mission of the Office of Adult and Continuing Education is to promote empowerment through teaching decision-making and problem solving skills that lead adult learners to gainful employment through a continuum of services - Basic Education, English as a Second Language, Occupational Training, Employment Preparation or a combination of all of these.
Our primary goal is to improve the total Adult Education delivery system with an emphasis on life-long learning, family literacy and work.
