DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM

The beginning and intermediate literacy Classes focus on developing basic skill in reading and language arts, and are for students who need intensive remedial work to improve their reading skills. The Literacy Classes provide reading and writing instruction across the curriculum. Students have the opportunity to advance through the beginning and intermediate level literacy classes or to the Pre-GED class.

The advanced literacy classes focus on preparing students to re-enter high school by offering high schools credits,/b> along with the development of higher level reading, writing, studey and research skills. A student can earn two credits each term.pre-GED Class focuses on the development of higher level reading, writing and study skills to prepare students to enter a GED program.

WHAT DETERMINES STUDENT PLACEMENT

All students are assigned to classes appropriate for his or her reading level according to the results of the stardardized test adminestered during intake

WHO WILL BENEFIT BY ATTENDING JAMES BALDWIN ACADEMY?

James Baldwin Academy is a school for any student who is from ages 17 through 21, can speak English, and who meets any of the following criteria:

Has a reading level that is between 0 to 6.5 and wants to improve his or her literacy skills.

Has a reading level 6.5 or higher and wants to gain credits and advance skills in order to return to high school (day or evening)

Has a reading level 5.0 or higher and wants to gain advance skills and build a stronger academic foundation before entering a GED program
