The Department of Sanitation (Staten Island) and Gateway (Brooklyn) are hosts to the two New York City Vocational Training Center's Automotive Repair Sites. The auto repair site at the Department of Sanitation is the home for the Department of Sanitation's lot for cleaning trucks. This site provides the students of NYC VTC with a classroom, auto repair shop and a wood working shop. Under the supervision of a NYC VTC site teacher the automotive and woodworking shops offer students an opportunity to learn and perform valuable skills such as preventative maintenance, brake repair, oil/filters, computer diagnostics, and tire alignment. The academic class offers students the academic instruction necessary to complete their diploma requirements or obtain a GED. At the Gateway Auto Site, located at Gateway/Floyd Bennet Field, students begin their day with academic instruction. Students at this site fulfill diploma requirements or study for the GED Exam. Following academic instruction, students join the NYC VTC site teacher. During shop class students are exposed to a wide variety of automotive-related tasks ranging from simple oil changes and lube jobs to complex engine rebuilding. Although all instruction and repairs are designed to help students transition into the world of work, many graduates from this site successfully gain admission into Delphi College to further their education in this field. |
