    OVERVIEW OF THE ESL PRE-VOC CLERICAL CLASS

    The Pre-Voc ESL Clerical Program is designed to provide students with a classroom setting that SIMULATES AN OFFICE. This teaches and encourages the students to use the language of the workplace and to learn and practice office skills in a non-threatening environment. The students are expected to perform "office-type" routines and responsibilities during class hours. Therefore,the classroom is transformed into a professional, business-like environment with students taking responsibility for various tasks throughout the term. Mutual cooperation and respect are promoted in the class.

    COURSE OBJECTIVES FOR THE ESL PRE-VOC CLERICAL CLASS

    1. Students will be able to read, understand, and write an opinion about
    2. articles from English newspapers.
    3. Students will be able to ask for clarification when they don't understand assignments and material discussed in class.
    4. Students will improve their knowledge of English vocabulary and become adept at using an English dictionary.
    5. Students will improve their ability to write business letters, reports and essays.
    6. Students will be able to identify different levels of office jobs and their tasks.
    7. Students will work on specific clerical skills such as filing, filling out forms, writing telephone messages.
    8. Students will maintain alphabetized and/or chronological files of their work.
    9. Students will become proficient in reading want ads and understanding abbreviations.
    10. Students will learn about networking and various ways to find jobs.
    11. Students will learn to appropriately fill out a job application.
    12. Students will practice & improve business telephone skills.
    13. Students will feel comfortable with making oral presentations.
    14. Students will understand the job interview process and practice interviewing skills.
    15. Students will develop, write and type a perfect resume.
    16. Students will improve keyboarding skills and type at least 25 words per minute.
    17. Students will become computer and Internet literate.
    18. Students will become efficient in using Microsoft Word.
    19. Students will complete research projects, including a job research project.

    HOW TO CREATE AN OFFICE ENVIRONMENT

    • Students maintain weekly attendance records
    • Students organize and maintain their portfolio-student file
    • Students are responsible for maintenance of other class files
    • Students often work in small groups and tables are arranged like conference tables.
    • Students will be asked to answer phone calls and take messages
    • The students will utilize in and out boxes
    • The students will keep a log record of their work..
